If you have used your PC for a long time without performing any disk-cleaning task, chances are that your disk has accumulated a large number of unnecessary duplicate files which you're not even aware of. Of course, this brings problems to your PC such as disk fragmentation and space waste. If this is your case, you need to look for an app such as Fast Duplicate File Finder. It allows you to detect and get rid of unnecessary duplicate files in a thorough and secure way.
Fast Duplicate File Finder, however, may not be as easy to use as it could be expected. The program offers you many configurable parameters that allow you to get the most accurate results. For example, you can select among three scan methods - 100% equal files, similar files, and similar file names. The last two methods enable you to configure a similarity percentage – the lower it is, the longer the scanning process will take.
Besides, you can select to compare files with just the same extensions, or all files regardless of their file type. There are also some auto-check tasks that you can configure to be executed after the scan process is complete. Unfortunately, all these parameters (and more) are crowded together within the same window, which turns the program hard to understand at first. By the way, I think that the program's visual design is too classical and could be improved.
Although Fast Duplicate File Finder is free, there is also a Pro version that you can buy for $39.95. Of course, the Pro version offers you some advantages over the free version, like using filters, exporting the results to XML or CSV formats, and using command-line features, among others. However, I should say that the free version of the program already includes a very good set of options and configurable parameters that allow you to find duplicate or similar files in a very convenient way. The program is lightweight and demands very low system resources from your PC.
